Routine Office Visits
Do you believe that simply brushing your teeth and flossing are enough to maintain a healthy smile? It is no secret that brushing and flossing are important; however, did you know that seeing the dentist at least twice a year is equally important to your oral health? Regular appointments generally consist of:
- Consultation – Dr. Wootton discusses and documents your medical history, including existing conditions you have or medications you are currently taking. He also inquires regarding any dental concerns you may have, and will answer any of your questions.
- Evaluation – Dr. Wootton thoroughly examines the teeth to detect any apparent signs of decay or damage. He also inspects the gums for evidence of gum disease and the jaw for TMJ disorder or bite problems.
- X-rays and photographs – In order to get a thorough look at the teeth and gums, complete X-rays need to be taken. X-rays can reveal any deeper problems that may be occurring, such as decay, bone loss, infection, and other abnormalities. X-rays ensure that all issues are found, and then can be treated as soon as possible. It is recommended that X-rays be taken at least once a year.
- Oral cancer screening – Dr. Wootton checks the entire mouth, including the cheeks, tongue, throat, and gums for any indication that oral cancer is present.
- Teeth cleaning – Our caring dental hygienist administers a deep teeth cleaning and polishing to eliminate any plaque and tarter buildup on the teeth and along the gum line. A professional teeth cleaning removes damaging substances that daily brushing cannot, including staining.
In-Office Preventive Treatments
Dr. Wootton may recommend that an in-office preventive treatment be administered for extra protection from harmful bacteria, including:
Fluoride – a gel full of healthy minerals is applied to the teeth for several minutes to restore strength. Particularly useful for young children whose teeth are still developing, fluoride has proven to help prevent decay, tooth sensitivity, or gum disease when combined with other good hygiene practices.
Dental Sealants – a plastic coating is bonded to the back teeth, filling, or “sealing” tiny cracks and grooves that are particularly susceptible to decay. Sealants are recommended for young children, as the treatment is highly effective for preventing decay and the development of cavities.
Patient Education
Our dental professionals take the time to meet with patients to educate them on proper everyday oral hygiene methods to apply in-between office visits, such as brushing, flossing, and rinsing. Additionally, nutritional advice will be given, as a healthy diet is important to maintaining optimal oral health as well. We equip patients with the necessary information to help prevent disease or other serious issues, and keep the smile immaculate and gorgeous.
