Starting at the Root of the Problem
Endodontics Austin
If tooth decay is left untreated for a period of time, it can spread to the tooth pulp, which surrounds the nerves that live inside the tooth, often causing unpleasant symptoms. When this occurs, root canal therapy is necessary to remove all of the damaging bacteria. While many individuals may carry a negative association with the term “root canal,” the procedure is essential to preserving the tooth. The alternative to root canal treatment is tooth extraction, which leads to a whole host of additional oral health problems.
Dr. Robert T. Wootton practices endodontics, including root canal therapy, at his Austin, Texas dental practice, Midtown Dental Associates. Our goal is to make the process as smooth and seamless as possible. We do what we can to put patients at ease and make them feel comfortable throughout treatment. Sedation dentistry is also an option for patients who feel a bit apprehensive about seeing the dentist. Dr. Wootton has a wealth of experience restoring health, functionality, and beauty to patients’ smiles. To learn more about endodontics, contact our Austin dental practice today.
Root Canal Therapy Procedure
The procedure is generally carried out in one to two office visits, which go as follows:
- Local anesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area.
- Using special dental instruments, an opening is made at the crown of the tooth and any pulp, nerve tissue, bacteria, and tooth decay are cleaned or removed if necessary.
- The tooth is then cleaned and filled with a dental filling.
- An impression will be taken of the teeth, so a restoration can be custom fabricated.
- During the next appointment, a dental crown will be placed over the tooth to restore strength and functionality.
Candidates for Root Canal Therapy
It is important to know that root pulp infection can be prevented. Individuals must go to the dentist for routine dental visits so the dentist can detect any minor problems before they turn into significant problems.
The best way to learn if you are in need of root canal therapy is to visit Dr. Wootton. Candidates include individuals with:
- Decay that has spread to the pulp inside the tooth
- Infection or abscess inside the tooth or at the root
- An injured or damaged tooth
Symptoms are not always present; however, individuals may experience:
- Tooth sensitivity, particularly to hot and cold
- Severe pain or discomfort
- Swelling or tenderness
- An abscess (small lump) on the gums
Benefits of Root Canal Therapy
If decay has reached the root of the tooth, and it is not treated, the tooth may become unsalvageable. Root canal therapy is not an elective procedure; it is necessary to the health of one’s smile. Additional benefits of root canal treatment include:
- Restore the tooth to look, feel, and function properly
- Preserve the natural teeth for as long as possible
- The treatment is proven successful
- Lasts many years, often an entire lifetime
- The loss of a tooth can lead to additional, costly oral health problems
- Alleviate painful symptoms associated with an infected tooth root
- Procedure is made to be as comfortable as possible, and sedation dentistry is optional
Risks or Side Effects of Root Canal Therapy
Upon completion of the surgery, the patient may experience some tooth sensitivity and swelling, which will subside after a short time. Dr. Wootton may prescribe pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort.
The pulp-free tooth may be more susceptible to chipping or breaking, and the tooth may also easily become discolored. Dr. Wootton will provide detailed aftercare instructions, so as to best maintain results. A dental restoration can also mitigate these concerns, as the tooth would be fully encapsulated.
